Ultrasound scan and imaging
What is an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create live images of the inside of the body. These sound waves bounce off different areas and are turned into moving pictures, allowing us to see what’s happening in real time.
At Yorkshire Baby Scan, we carry out external ultrasound scans, where a small probe is gently moved over the skin. This produces clear images and short video clips, helping us capture important moments and provide reassurance during your scan.
What does an internal or trans-vaginal scan involve?
To get a better view of the baby, a trans-vaginal scan may be necessary. It is usually carried out when an external (abdominal) scan has not provided enough detail. This scan involves a transducer or probe similar in size and shape to a tampon that is inserted into your vagina and connected to the ultrasound machine. This gives us a better view of the fetus as the probe is closer to the uterus.
Preparing for your appointment
Do I need a referral from my GP or midwife?
No referral is required for any of our private scans. We recommend attending your NHS appointments as usual. Our scans are complementary to NHS care and provide extra reassurance or keepsake opportunities.
What should I do before my scan?
You should make your appointment no earlier than two weeks after your positive pregnancy test and no earlier than six weeks after the first day of your last period. This is your ‘last menstrual period date’ or LMP.
Please arrive with a full bladder. This will help the sonographer be able to get a clear picture of your baby by transabdominal scan.
If a transabdominal scan isn’t possible, a transvaginal scan may be required to view your baby.
If you have any uncertainties or need clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact us, or for a full preparation guide, please read our blog post here.
What should I wear to my scan?
For most scans it is recommended that you wear a loose-fitting, two-piece outfit, as this allows easy access to your abdomen.
When should I book my scan?
Booking depends on the type of scan:
- Early Pregnancy Scan: 6–11 weeks
- Gender Scan: 16+ weeks
- 4D Bonding Scan: 24–32 weeks
We recommend booking early to secure your preferred time, especially for 4D scans or weekend appointments. You can check availability and book online here.
How long should I leave between scans?
There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s completely up to you! Many parents love visiting us regularly to check everything is progressing well and to capture precious moments along the way. Others choose just a single scan, like a dating or gender scan. Whatever you decide, we’re always here to welcome you and make each visit a special experience.
When can I have a gender scan?
From as early as 16 weeks our sonographers can check your baby’s gender. It is also helpful for you to come with a full bladder so we can get the best view of your baby.
During your appointment
How long will my scan appointment take, and what happens if my baby isn't in the best position?
As every baby and stage of pregnancy is different, appointment times can vary depending on your baby’s position and visibility during the scan. Some babies are easy to see straight away, while others may be curled up, sleeping, or facing away, which can make capturing clear images a little more difficult. If needed, we may ask you to move around, change position, or take a short walk to encourage baby to settle into a better position for scanning. We always allow enough time for your appointment to ensure you have a relaxed experience and never feel rushed during your visit.
What might I see?
The baby’s heartbeat, body and limb movements can usually be identified. The baby may be seen moving during an ultrasound examination earlier in the pregnancy than you are able to feel it move.
Will it hurt?
There is no pain involved in an ultrasound scan of your pelvis although there may be minor discomfort for some women in maintaining a full bladder required in early pregnancy scans.
What are the risks?
Diagnostic ultrasound has been used in pregnancy for many years with no known side effects or risks.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, you are welcome to bring along those close to you who also want to share this amazing experience. Initially only one other person will be allowed in with you, however once the baby is in view everyone can take turns in seeing the scan.
Can I bring my children to the scan?
Children are welcome. For the safety and comfort of all clients, we ask that an extra adult supervises younger children during your appointment.
Scan results and aftercare
Will I receive a report after my scan?
Yes, all scans include a medical report detailing our findings. We also provide optional extras:
- Basic package: Four printed images of your baby
- Photo bundle package: Eight printed images of your baby to share with family and friends (+£10.00)
- Upgrade Package: Four printed photographs of your baby plus all digital images supplied on a USB stick (+£20.00)*
*We do not provide digital images via email.
Should I inform my NHS midwife about my private scan results?
It is entirely your choice, but we do recommend that you let your midwife or maternity team know. Keeping them updated ensures they have the full picture of your pregnancy and can continue to provide you and your baby with the safest care. In some cases, especially in early pregnancy, further follow-up with the NHS may be recommended.
What happens if I need ongoing care?
In the event that your scan results require a referral, our clinic teams have relationships with local NHS trusts and will work with you to book a follow up appointment for your ongoing care.
What if I'm expecting twins?
If you’re expecting twins or multiple babies we kindly ask that you book your scan over the phone on 01904 413669. Scanning for multiple babies does take longer and requires more care and detail. Calling our team to book allows for us to allocate extra time for your booking and we can also discuss any extra fees that may be involved.
