Why a presentation scan matters in late pregnancy

As pregnancy progresses into the later stages, it’s natural to start thinking about your baby’s position and what that could mean for labour and birth. A presentation scan is an ultrasound examination that confirms how your baby is positioned in the womb at the time of the scan, providing accurate information to support discussions with your maternity team as you prepare for birth.

At our York clinic, presentation scans are typically performed during the third trimester, when your baby’s position is more likely to remain stable and is increasingly relevant to birth planning.

What does a presentation scan check?

The purpose of a presentation scan is to confirm your baby’s position in the uterus, at the time of the scan. This includes whether baby is:

  • Head down (cephalic presentation)
  • Bottom or feet first (breech)
  • Lying sideways (transverse lie)

The scan also includes checks of your baby’s heartbeat, amniotic fluid levels and blood flow through your umbilical cord.

Ultrasound has been used safely in pregnancy for many years and has no known harmful effects when performed by appropriate trained healthcare professionals. It is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique to assess your baby’s position and fetal development.

Why does your baby’s position matter?

As your due date approaches, your baby’s presentation becomes increasingly important because it may influence the discussions you have with your maternity team about your birth options.

Most babies move into a head down (cephalic) before labour begins, which is the most common position for a vaginal birth. However, some babies remain in breech or transverse position later in pregnancy.

Knowing your baby’s presentation can help you better understand your pregnancy as it progresses and provides useful information to support conversations with your midwife about any additional assessment or care that may be recommended.

Can your baby’s position still change?

Yes. During the earlier part of the third trimester, many babies continue to change position. As your pregnancy advances, there is less space within the uterus making your baby’s position more likely to remain stable.

A presentation scan provides an accurate assessment of your baby’s position at the time of the scan, but it can not predict whether that position will remain the same until labour begins.

When is a presentation scan is usually performed

Presentation scans are commonly performed from around 36 weeks of pregnancy, when your baby’s position is more likely to reflect how they are presenting before birth.

Many expectant parents choose a presentation scan to:

  • Confirm whether their baby is head down
  • Better understand their baby’s current position
  • Preparing for discussions about labour and birth
  • Gain additional information alongside their routine maternity care.

Knowing your baby’s presentation can help inform discussion with your midwife about labour and birth. Clinical evidence highlights that fetal presentation is an important consideration in birth planning, particularly if a baby is in a breech presentation later in pregnancy.

What a presentation scan can not tell you

A presentation scan provides a snapshot of your baby’s position at the time of the examination. While it accurately shows how your baby is presenting on the day of the scan, it can not predict when labour will begin, how labour will progress, or whether your baby’s position will change before birth.

Although your baby’s presentation usually becomes more stable during the final weeks of pregnancy, pregnancy remains a dynamic and changes can still occur.

For this reason, the presentation scan should be viewed as a valuable source of information about your baby’s current presentation rather than a guarantee of how labour or birth will unfold.

If you would like to know more about your baby’s position, you are welcome to book a presentation scan.

How presentation scans supports birth preparation

Preparing for birth involves understanding your options and having access to accurate information. A presentation scan provides additional information alongside your routine maternity care, helping you understand your baby’s current position as you approach your due date.

For many expectant parents, the value of the scan lies in having a clearer understanding of their baby’s presentation and being able to discuss any questions or next steps with their maternity team.

Preparing for the final weeks of pregnancy

A presentation scan offers an accurate assessment (at the time of the scan) of your baby’s position during the later stage of pregnancy. While it can not predict how labour will begin or whether your baby’s position will change before birth, it provides useful information that may support discussions with your midwife as you prepare for labour.

If you are approaching the end of your pregnancy and would like to know your baby’s current position, a presentation scan may be a helpful part of your birth preparation.
