What is a Dating Scan?
A dating scan is performed when you are between 11 and 14 weeks pregnant and will be performed transabdominally (over the tummy). This scan is an opportunity for you to meet your baby for the first time and find out your estimated due date.
At the dating scan, you will be given the option to have a nuchal translucency (NT) scan. The NT scan is optional and it is your choice whether you would like the sonographer to perform the NT scan or not.
For the NT scan, the sonographer will measure the fluid behind your baby's neck. A raised NT measurement can sometimes indicate the baby might have a problem with their chromosomes, their heart or other structural issues with their body.
Receiving a normal NT result can be reassuring and gives you the peace of mind that all is well with your baby at that gestation.
How should I prepare for my Dating Scan?
Please arrive with a full bladder. This will help the sonographer be able to get a clear picture of your baby on the scan.
Please attend your appointment with a full bladder.
